Grade 3 English

Grade 3 is an exciting year!  It is the last year that students will be in the primary grades and the last year that they will be the “younger buddies”.   The new British Columbia Curriculum for Grade 3 allows for integrated learning and exploration.

Religion:

  • Identify and differentiate the difference between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as the Three Persons in the Holy Trinity
  • Recall the Apostles’ Creed
  • Recognize the Catholic Church as a community which has a common Baptism as a set of beliefs based on the Apostles Creed
  • Describe the Holy Spirit at Pentecost in the creation of the Church
  • Identify the sacramental found in a Catholic Church
  • Demonstrate an understanding that our bodies are sacred
  • Identify the parts of Mass and where they can take an active role
  • Participate in, and reflect on, school Eucharist Liturgies
  • Reflect on the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the cycle of the liturgical year
  • Recognize the fifty days of Easter as a major liturgical season ending on Pentecost Sunday
  • Participate in celebrations relating to the Holy Spirit
  • Identify that administrating the sacraments is a key aspect of the vocation of priesthood
  • Distinguish between just and unjust situations
  • Identify models of just living from Scripture and from their community
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the consequence of one’s actions on self and others
  • Make the connection between making good moral decisions and the Sacrament of Reconciliation
  • Recognize Mary as an example of the perfect disciple
  • Acknowledge and affirm the gifts and talents of others, both young and old
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of showing respect and appreciation for others’ gifts and talents

Language Arts:

  • Language and story can be a source of creativity and joy

Social Studies:

  • Learning about indigenous peoples nurtures multicultural awareness and respect for diversity
  • People from diverse cultures and societies share some common experiences and aspects of life
  • Indigenous knowledge is passed down through oral history, traditions, and collective memory
  • Indigenous societies throughout the world value the well-being of the self, the land, spirits, and ancestors

Science:

  • Living things are diverse, can be grouped, and interact in their ecosystems
  • All matter is made of particles
  • Thermal energy can be produced and transferred
  • Wind, water, and ice change the shape of the land

Math:

  • Fractions are a type of number that can represent quantities
  • Development of computational fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers requires flexible decomposing and composing
  • Regular increases and decreases in patterns can be identified and used to make generalizations
  • standard units are used to describe, measure, and compare attributes of objects’ shapes
  • the likelihood of possible outcomes can be examined, compared, and interpreted

Music:

  • Singing (mass prep, fun songs with actions)
  • Rhythms (rhythm flashcards, rhythm bingo)
